Canon City, Colorado

Our home for the month of July will be Canon City, Colorado.  Our campground is about 7 miles west of the town.  It's nice with a grand view of the Sangre de Christo Mountains.

The Canon City area will provide us with lots to do and explore.  The Royal Gorge Bridge is about 2 or 3 miles from our campground.  One must now enter the Royal Bridge Gorge and Park and pay to walk across one of the highest suspension bridges in the world.  Ronnie and I drove over the bridge in 1984 when we were visiting this area.  It was an experience we still remember.  Maybe we'll walk the bridge on this visit.

One drive we have enjoyed so far in the Canon City area is their Skyline Drive.  It was built in 1908 by inmate labor.  Ron didn't tell me about the road, he just turned in..and boy was it was scary my first trip!

Entrance way to the Skyline Drive.

Oh no!!  No guard rails!

There are dinosaur foot prints are where the road bends around that rock outcropping.

We have already twice driven the Skyline Drive (youtube video that will make your head dizzy it's been sped up so fast)..it's a lot of fun now and with great views of Canon City and Hwy 50 below.  I'm sure Ron will drive it few more times before we leave the area.  There's even Dinosaur foot prints visible on the drive.
Info placard..you can click on photo to enlarge it for better reading.  It describes how the foot prints were formed sort of like a casting or "negative" reversal a normal foot impression into the sand.
These info placards also give the geological history of the rock formations.
As you look above on the rock shelf, you can see several "protruding" foot prints.
Close up view of one of the foot impressions
There were several foot prints here and I think one of them accidentally fell off at one time.

Happy July Fourth to everyone!
More later..

  1. You're in an area we've spent time exploring. Up highway 115 just before you get to the Army base is a campground....Mountaidale cabins and RV park...love the area! Enjoy your time there
