Sunday Strolling DC's Eastern Market

Sunday started out cool and cloudy.  Researching different things to do in Washington, we discover the Eastern Market Place located in the heart of a Capitol Hill neighborhood.  Amazingly, this market has been in operation for over 136 years! The Eastern Market, with food and arts&crafts vendors, is open every Sunday.  We love farmers markets and this sounds like a nice place to visit off the National Mall (aka the beaten path), so we head out using the Metro. Easy.

We find lots of color even on this cloudy day.

It took a while for me to capture a photo without lots of people. The Market was busy!

We enjoyed some delicious quesadillas from a local restaurant operating out of their food truck but took no foodie photos this time. Now full and renewed with energy, we stroll down Pennsylvania Avenue towards Capitol Hill.  Soon, we come upon the Library of Congress, US Capitol Building and the US Supreme Court Building.

Library Of Congress.  It's closed today, however we plan to return to see the restored interior.

We had no idea the facade of the Library of Congress would be so beautiful, we will definitely be back to see the inside.

Across the street from the Library of Congress is the United States Capitol.

Continuing on, we come to the US Supreme Court Building.  Again, because it is Sunday, everything is closed but we still enjoy climbing the steps and getting a full view of the columns and architecture.

Looking up, you get a good view of those Corinthian columns supporting the pediment.

The two large sculptures on either side have symbolic meaning (as do many of the building's relief sculptures).  The left one, a female, is Contemplation of Justice and the right sculpture, a male figure, is the Guardian or Authority of Law.

Not much going on at the US Capitol either since it is Sunday.  This is the west view.

Walking around to the east view, we identify the Presidential inaugural platform area.

Looking across from the east view, we see the Washington Monument and the reflecting pool.

Suddenly, a tour bus disembarks all of these men wearing bright orange clothing.  We don't know who they were but can only surmise they could be monks? visiting the US Capitol.  Several folks were taking their photo like me, they were such a bright pop of color on a cloudy, gray day.

After about 12,000 steps again today, it's time to go back to our motorhome and rest.
More Later.

  1. I’ve been enjoying your Washington exploits. Your words and photos bring back a lot of memories. I hope you did return to see the interior of the LoC ... it’s truly wonderful. Those men look like Buddhist monks to me.
